About Us

The official website of the Madison Bureau of Investigations — publications, records, forms, and recruitment.

Our Mission

Formed in 1937 to centralize criminal investigations across the State of Madison, the Madison Bureau of Investigation is the state's primary investigatory agency, responsible for violent crime, narcotics, government and criminal intelligence, and forensic enforcement statewide. We exist to enhance the Madison criminal justice system and provide expertise to law enforcement throughout the state — holding every Special Agent to a standard of versatility, competence, and professionalism, and every record to fidelity, bravery, and integrity.

Our Values

Fidelity

We hold ourselves to our word — to the people we serve and to each other, without exception.

Integrity

We act on what's right even when it's difficult, and we don't ask others to take risks we won't.

Transparency

Our conduct holds up to scrutiny — in the field, in our records, and in how we treat one another.

Our History

The Madison Bureau of Investigation was formed on March 3rd, 1937, to centralize criminal investigations across the State of Madison and combat the growing violent crime in the years before the war. In 1940, the bureau completed a successful raid on the Carmine family, prompting the Governor to order a surge of recruitment that expanded its operations. Today, the bureau serves as the state's primary investigatory agency, responsible for violent crime, narcotics, government, criminal & domestic intelligence, as well as criminal enforcement and forensics across the state. Its headquarters in Hudsonville houses internal affairs, tactical support, and administrative staff; the Ridgefield office is home to the Violent Crime Section and Forensics Unit; and the Fulton Field Office serves as the bureau's intelligence network — three offices working in conjunction to investigate and dismantle violent crime statewide.
